There are many great restaurants, tearooms and cafes in Northumberland. I can’t mention them all unfortunately but this has to be our favourite.
LOLLO ROSSO ITALIAN RESTAURANT
Our family is particularly fond of Italian food and anyone who knows us will be aware that we’re big fans of Lollo Rosso in Morpeth. There are 3 owners, Giovanni, Miguel and Nikos, all of whom will give you a very warm welcome upon arrival. The restaurant is on 2 floors and is housed in a former Ironmongers store. The transformation from store to restaurant is very impressive and can seat many diners, which is just as well because it’s extremely popular. You often have to book weeks in advance to secure a table on Friday and Saturday evenings but it’s worth the wait. The menu is extensive with the usual dishes you would expect in an Italian restaurant such as pizzas, pasta dishes, fresh fish and meat with vegetarian options. My personal favourites are Gamberoni Piccante with garlic, tomato and herbs or Penne Lollo Rosso with tomato, spicy sausage, bacon and a touch of chilli. Both dishes are delicious washed down with a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio or red wine if you prefer.

One of the reasons we really enjoy this restaurant is that it has entertainment at the weekends so it’s great for a special occasion like a birthday celebration. They usually have a singer who will entertain you while you’re eating and after a few glasses of vino, it never takes much persuasion for most people to get up and ‘strut their funky stuff’. Well, at least we don’t seem to have a problem with this particular pastime. When Rob is dining with us, he is always more than happy to live up to the label he’s been given by his former Uni course mate as ‘Dancing Rob’.
Lollo Rosso has never disappointed us. The atmosphere is always amazing, the food is delicious and the owners extremely friendly and welcoming. Even if you’re not celebrating and decide to visit during a week day or at lunchtime, Lollo Rosso is a fabulous dining experience.
